U.S. Airways Receives Approval for Rio de Janeiro Flights March 24, 2009

U.S. Airways has received approval from the Department of Transportation to begin flights to Brazil.The carrier applied to start services from its Philadelphia hub to Rio de Janeiro this year.It is tentatively scheduled to begin operations on its new route in the fall, flying using Boeing 767 aircraft which have 186 main cabin seats and 18 business class seats.

Qantas has extended its sale fare offer for Americans planning a trip Down Under.The Australian carrier is now offering the sale until March 31st as a result of high demand from U.S. travelers.Deals include one-way flights starting at just $299 from Los Angeles or San Francisco to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Auckland.The discount airfare begins at $399 for New York flights to these destinations (with the exception of Auckland). Based on a roundtrip purchase, these cheap flights include taxes and surcharges and are valid for travel through October 24th.

DOT Gives Tentative ‘OK’ for Continental’s Rio Flights March 24, 2009

The Department of Transportation just gave Continental Airlines tentative approval to fly non-stop from its Bush Houston Intercontinental (IAH) hub to Rio de Janeiro (GIG), beginning this summer.Travelers hoping for cheap flights to Rio can start their travels in New Orleans (MSY) and connect on a Rio flight in Houston.

Alitalia is spreading the love – or, should we say ‘amore’ – with spring flights to Italy from $349 round-trip, including taxes and fees.In a search for flights to Rome using dates April 21 and April 27 for round-trip travel from New York City, fares started at $392 round-trip on other airlines. The same route with the same dates on Alitalia: $349 round-trip, including all fees.Several routes between the U.S. and Italy start at $400 round-trip, or less.

Not since the heyday of the late Pan Am has a United States network airline lofted this kind of service to Africa.Delta Air Lines will be providing Atlanta (ATL) flights to Nairobi, Keya (NBO), beginning June 2nd; and New York (JFK) flights to Monrovia, Liberia (ROB) starting June 8th. In each instance, there will be a connecting flight to Dakar, Senegal (DKR).

Southwest Airlines has launched a new nationwide sale with cheap air fares starting as lows as $49.Sample one-way prices include Burbank flights to Sacramento for $49, Denver flights to Oakland for $69 and Chicago flights to Manchester for $89.These sale fares are must be booked from the airline’s website no later than April 6th. Travel must take place Mondays through Thursdays and Saturdays before August 14th.

South African Airways Expands U.S. Service March 23, 2009

South African Airways is expanding the range of its services by offering U.S. travelers connections for Johannesburg flights and Botswana flights.The carrier will offer the Johannesburg-Gabarone service to American passengers landing in South Africa from March 23rd onward. Two new flights will operate between Sundays and Fridays and one service will take place on Saturdays.
