It’s all change at the top at Aer Lingus where Dermot Mannion has resigned from his position as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). In a statement released this morning (Monday, April 6), Mannion said: “My decision to step down will allow a new CEO to bring fresh thinking and new ideas to the business”.Colm Barrington, Chairman of Aer Lingus, will act as executive chairman until a new chief executive is recruited.During Mannion’s tenure, Aer Lingus spread its wings with new long-haul routes to the USA and Middle East.

Aer Lingus is offering huge discounts to passengers departing from London Gatwick Airport on one of its seven new services.The Irish carrier, which has recently been subjected to a hostile takeover bid from Ryanair, is attempting to rival the budget airline on a number of services by reducing one-way fares to just £9.99, including all taxes, fees and surcharges.Subject to terms, conditions and availability, this offer applies to flights to Munich, Vienna and Nice from April 20 2009, and services to Zurich and Knock from April 6 2009.

Aer Lingus has reiterated its decision to reject Ryanair’s €750 million acquisition offer, which would have created a monopoly on air travel to and from Ireland.The Irish flag carrier met with the country’s Minister for Transport and suggested that Ryanair’s offer was primarily motivated by the desire to “eliminate competition in the market”.The government owns more than 25 per cent of the loss-making carrier; however, the chairman of Aer Lingus claimed that he would seek another investor to stave off the bid.
